What is a Domain Name

Your domain name is your website address on the internet and gives you an online identity or brand. It's a valuable part of your business identity and is an extremely important marketing tool that can help customers find and identify with your business. The Domain name is like having a street address to which people can look you up find you and remember you easily.

Some examples of an internet domain name is; johndoe.com or banzoo.com.au or billboardsaustralia.com.au or wikipedia.org.

A Domain Name is Not the Same as URL

To be technically correct, a domain name is commonly part of a larger Internet address called a "URL". A URL goes into much more detail than domain name, providing much more information, including the specific page address, folder name, machine name, and protocol language.

An example of a URL with the domain name is bold is; http://www.johndoe.com/whoisjohn/home.php, or http://banzoo.com.au/#About, or http://www.billboardsaustralia.com.au/advice/creative

How Do I use my Domain Name?

A domain name is simply the address for your website. You still need to physically store your website somewhere on a host so the website can work. To do this you need to buy hosting. Web Hosting or 'Hosting' is a service provided by a vendor which offers a physical location for the storage of web pages and files. Think of a Web Hosting Company as a type of landlord, they rent physical space on their servers allowing web pages to be viewed on the Internet. Your domain is pointed to your stored or hosted web files and Internet users will now be able to find your website online.
